'A UN study showed this worrying warning: if the current situation persists, basis the services and infrastructure in that territory will collapse,' the organization's top official said.
Speaking in the first session in 2018 of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP), the diplomat highlighted how Gaza is still oppressed and in a continuous state of humanitarian emergency.
Two million Palestinians are facing a ruined infrastructure, electricity crisis, lack of basic services, chronic unemployment and a stagnated economy every day. All that is happening amid a developing environmental disaster, he said.
Guterres also expressed concern about the deficit in the financing by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) that affects the capacity to maintain the humanitarian assistance and preserve essential services as education and health.
Human security is at stake, the same as the rights and dignity of five million Palestinian refugees, but also the stability of a region that could be affected if UNRWA stops working, the UN secretary-general said.
Faced with such panorama, there is no other option than creating two States to guarantee a sustainable solution to the conflict. There is no plan B in that reference, he remarked. (Cadenagramonte)
