Havana, July 3.- The presentation in multimedia format of the New National Atlas of Cuba took place during the second day of the xii International Convention on Environment and Development, which will be held until Friday at the Havana Convention Center.

Grouped into six sections composed of the sections of General and Reference Maps, Economy, Nature, Society, Strategic Issues, and History and Culture, the work has the distinction of being the first of its kind made entirely by Cuban specialists, in addition to being the result of an innovation project, which included the use of advanced geographic information systems and global positioning. Likewise, it required the use of innovative technologies associated with the processing of large databases.

As Dr. Jorge Ángel Luis Machín, director of the Institute of Tropical Geography, explained to Granma, and Miguel Marrero Basulto, a researcher from that same entity who took over the direction of the project, the Atlas will initially have an application for mobile phones. and online services, while there is the prospect of taking it to print edition in 2020, with the purpose of distributing it in schools and libraries.

A more complete version of the multimedia, which will have more than 175 maps and other attractive illustrative resources, will be ready to be presented in the context of the commemorative activities for the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Havana, on November 16, asserted both experts.

Together with the Institute of Tropical Geography, the Geocuba Research and Consulting Company of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Enterprise of Information Technologies and Advanced Telematic Services (Citmatel) worked in the Atlas, with the collaboration of the Gamma Investment Company.

Professionals and technicians from a large number of scientific institutions, teachers, scientific societies and the Central Administration of the State also participated in its implementation.

National atlases reflect the reality of a country in its most diverse edges and are a very useful tool for territorial planning and decision making. (Granma)
