Cuban National Ballet to Welcome Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky

Photo: PLPhoto: PLHavana, Sep 2.- Prestigious Russian-American choreographer Alexei Ratmansky arrived in Cuba today to stage a revival of his Concerto DSCH with Cuba's National Ballet (BNC).

As Viengsay Valdes, prima ballerina and deputy artistic director of the company, explained, this is a luxury opportunity, as Ratmansky is an internationally recognized choreographer, in great demand, with an incredible career and among the best in the world.

'Ratmansky is artist in residence at the American Ballet Theater and his contributions will provide our dancers with new trends in movement, mobility, and will allow them to perform an extraordinary piece in the style of George Balanchine,' stressed the dancer.

Concerto DSCH, with the music of Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, op. 102 (1957), is a divertimento, an ensemble ballet with soft moments, fast scenes, and including duets, trios and a dance troupe, noted Valdes.

In October, the BNC will receive another renowned choreographer, the Brazilian Ricardo Amarante, to restage one of his pieces - Love, Fear, Lost; a ballet that recreates the tragic life of French singer Edith Piaf and reflects the sentiments of the title in each pas de deux.

'Love is joy, that feeling of love, the meeting of couples; Fear is the fear of loss, and Lost is being at a complete loss, a more dramatic pas de deux, but that arrives really well because it helps the dancers to perform in an expressive and dramatical way,' explained Valdes. (PL)
