Electoral Authorities Certify Outcome of Local Elections in Cuba

Photo: ArchiveHavana, Dec 1.- The Cuban Electoral Commission (CEN) has reportedly certified the outcome of the election of 11,415 delegates to Municipal Assemblies of the People's Power, held on November 26, which was the first stage of a process that will wind up with the election of the island's new president on February 24 next year.
The head of CEN, Alina Balseiro, was quoted by Granma daily as saying the validation was done after they checked the compatibility of the electoral register with the inclusions and exclusions of voters.
A runoff vote will be held on Sunday, December 3, in 1,100 districts (of 12,515), in which none of the candidates won more than 50 percent of the valid ballots.
The November 26 stats show that 7,610,183 eligible people turned out to vote, representing 89.02 percent.
The quality of the voting is marked by 91.79 percent of valid ballots, a figure higher than that of 2015, when CEN reported 90.52 percent.
Blank votes represented only 4.12 percent, and null votes 4.07. Both percentages are lower than those recorded in the previous local elections.
According to Balseiro, the runoff vote will be held in 153 municipalities of the country and about 3,222 polling stations will be involved. (Cadenagramonte)
