Omara Portuondo will open the Festival of the Arts in Washington

Photo: Cadenagramonte.Havana, May 8.- The splendid voice of Omara Portuondo, which summarizes the values of decades of good Cuban music, will open the Festival of the Arts of Cuba that, from today until next June 3, will fill rooms and spaces of the Kennedy Center, in the capital of the United States.
In addition to Omara, the opening day will include the orchestra of the University of the Arts, attached to the Lyceum Mozartiano of Havana, juvenile Dazón orchestra Miguel Failde, of Matanzas; the pianists Aldo López Gavilán and Jorge Luis Pacheco, the saxophonist Yosvany Terry, guitarist Ali Arango and the vocalist Aymee Nuviola.
While the Administration Trump undoes a good part of the advances in political and cultural relations between the two nations, Cuban artists living in the island and outside of it (the majority in the United States) go to the capital of the North American country to display the value of the Cuban culture.
"Arts of Cuba: from the island to the World" is the name of this event, which will bring together more than 400 artists, among them about 240 traveling from our homeland.
Creators of the plastic as Manuel Mendive, Roberto Fabelo, Esterio Segura and Roberto Diago bring their works to Washington, where they will be accompanied by the music of Van Van, the family Lopez-Nusa, the Orchestra of the Liceo Mozartiano of Havana, Yissy Garcia, Zule Guerra, Aldo López-Gavilán, the pianist Ulises Hernández, the Orchestra Failde, rappers La Reina and La Real, Pablo and Haydée Milanés, among others.
The eight rooms and the 22 spaces in the Kennedy Center will be filled by Cuban ballet and theater companies such as Argos Teatro, Teatro El Público, and the Irene Rodriguez and Malpaso.
Even the cinema will do an act of presence with the exhibition of classics as Memorias del subdesarrollo and Retrato de Teresa, in addition to other recent success Conducta.
In total, will be about 50 events featuring some 400 artists, the vast majority of graduates of schools of art in Cuba.
Many of the Cuban artists residing abroad who will come to the appointment of Washington before have been presented in Cuba at events such as the Havana Biennial, the Jazz Plaza Festival and other important spaces. Among them are singers and musicians Aymee Nuviola, Arturo O'Farril, Dafnis Prieto, Adonis González, Mauricio Herrera, Yosvany Terry and plastic artists such as Jose Parla and Emilio Pérez.

"One of the things that I try to connect to is the fact that the United States has in its DNA The Cuban music and Cuban arts," he told The Washington Post the curator of the festival and vice president of Programming and International Dance at the Kennedy Center, Alicia Adams, who pointed out that the Cuban influences can be found in the United States from the 19th century. The closure of the Festival will be the presentation, from the end of May until June 3, the National Ballet of Cuba, directed by Alicia Alonso, who returns to the Kennedy Center 40 years after its first performance in this renowned stage.
