Cuba Assumes the Presidency of the ECLAC

Photo: Cadenagramonte.Havana, May 8.- Cuba today assumed the chairmanship of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), at the 37th session of the agency, whose sessions were held here.
The opening ceremony was attended by the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the general secretariat of the Association of Caribbean States, June Summer.
With headquarters in the Palace of Conventions of Havana, the event is one of the most important forum of the Agency, which positions the equality as a fundamental principle for development, distinguished by ECLAC Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena.
According to Bárcena, the forum should examine important issues to deal with the scourge of poverty in this area of the planet which continues to be the most unequal in the distribution of wealth.
The start of the meeting was the hallmark of the Cuban company La Colmenita children's theater, which with their dances and songs paid tribute to ECLAC, which in 2018 celebrates its 70 years of existence.
As is customary practice, the day prior to the 37th session, they discussed different topics proposed by the host country, which on this occasion focused on the contribution of ECLAC to the economic and social thought in Latin America and the Caribbean, South-South cooperation, the implementation in Cuba of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and foreign direct investment (FDI).
In the opinion of Bárcena, this nation of the Antilles is relevant example of how much can be done in favor of South-South cooperation, despite its limited financial resources and the damage caused by the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States.
During the day this Tuesday is referred to a panel on the 70 anniversary of ECLAC, with the intervention of four ex-secretaries of that body: Enrique Iglesia, José Antonio Ocampo, José Luis Machinea and Hert Rosentlal.
Until next Friday will convene the meeting, to consider a new study by ECLAC entitled the inefficiency of inequality. (Cadenagramonte)
