Photo: PLCamagüey, Jun 5.- Cuba is at the forefront of global environmental issues, highlighted today the coordinator of the United Nations System in the country, Consuelo Vidal-Bruce, on a special day for the World Environment Day.

'Cubans, all governmental and scientific organizations, make efforts that are at the forefront of the issue worldwide; for the United Nations System is a privilege to support them,' the special envoy expressed exclusively to Prensa Latina.

The management of ecosystems and biodiversity, the basis for development and human subsistence itself, made this region with over 16,000 square kilometers and 22 protected areas worthy of the national act for World Environment Day.

'We believe that the implementation of the projects in the Cuban case is very constructive because there is institutional capacity, which makes our projects have results beyond what we had originally conceived,' Vidal deemed.

After the effects of Hurricane Irma in this eastern Cuban region in 2017, environmental indicators achieve regularity, thanks to the implementation of the 'Life Task,' plan of the Cuban State, and which corresponds to the agenda for sustainable development 2020-2030, analyzed in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Havana.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) awarded the National Environment Award to the Hotel Iberostar Parque Central, to the Soda and Bottled Water Company 'Los Portales,' and to the Historian of the city of Havana, Eusebio Leal, for their contributions to the preservation of nature.

With the presence of the Deputy Minister of Citma, Fernando Mario González, the meeting for the World Environment Day took place at the Avellaneda Theater in the area of the city declared a World Heritage Site, and brought together researchers with remarkable results that give prestige to the science of Cuba.

At present 70 billion tons of resources are used annually, the extraction of biomass and fuel increases up to 80 percent, while fishing activity and greenhouse gases directly impact the health of the planet.

Established since 1972, World Environment Day carries the message of the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, so that 'together we can trace the path towards a cleaner and greener planet.'

The official declaration of the United Nations maintains that the protection and improvement of the human environment are fundamental issues that affect the welfare of the peoples and the economic development of the whole world. (PL)
