Foto: CadenagramonteCamagüey, Oct 19.- Between 200 and 300 women are surgically intervened each year in Camagüey due to breast cancer ; this was reported by Dr. Leonardo Hernández,  second-degree specialist in Oncology, and head of Mastology service at the María Curie Oncology Teaching Hospital in this province.

Considered in the world as the first cause of death, and with an incidence in Cuba of 34 patients every hundred thousand people, this condition has a high incidence in Camagüey.

However, according to the expert, survival is about 80% at five years, in which they raise awareness to the woman about her illness, the discipline in the treatment and the timely attention is very important.

Hernández also drew attention to the cancer of nipple in men, which tends to be known less and to have less health education in this regard. Out of every hundred female patients, there's a male one.

Among the causes of increased case registration and incidence rate of breast or nipple cancer, specialists point to population ageing and early detection.

Every October 19, the World Day Against Breast Cancer is celebrated, with the aim of sensitizing the population to one of the main causes of death in the big city, and to promote policies and programs appropriate to reduce the cases of this disease, which records each year 1,380,000 of new cases and 458,000 deaths.
