Photo: JITCamagüey. - The Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz University, of Camagüey, is a reference among the centers of higher education in the country in terms of physical activity practice. The sport enrolls students and workers, something that could be corroborated in the very playing fields.
Santiago Lajes Choy, rector of that house of high studies, ensures that the management of the center offers sport and physical activity a great importance.
"This university has historically supported sports, both internally, with a well-planned calendar, and externally. It is common that we welcome the basketball, football and boxing teams of the province, and we support them in their preparation by offering our own facilities, "explained the professor.
The Agramontino center sponsors the basketball team Tigres de Camagüey, as well as some players who study in their classrooms the Degree in Physical Culture and Sports.
But it's not just that. In the university several disciplines are practiced, and they even built a field of Baseball Five to make the first national final of the modality.
"A year ago the Camagueyan Yumilka Ruiz, international coordinator of Baseball Five, invited us to participate in a competition. We accepted and made this land. We started playing and it is already a massive movement. It is practiced even over other sports. That event calls the crowds. We hosted the national tournament and participated as a guest team. It is already in the calendar for the games of the University next year, "says the also deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power and chairman of its commission on Industry, Construction and Energy.
The effervescence with the new discipline is such that the university team is directed by Felipe Sarduy, one of the great glories of Cuban baseball.
Of course, not only is Five Baseball trained. The institution also achieved excellent results as hosts of the XIII National Universiade, held in 2017.
"We won the gold medal in baseball and beach volleyball for ladies. And we got money in volleyball and men's basketball, which are the most traditional sports here, "said the director.
The first university founded by the Revolution dedicates one day of the week to the massive practice of physical activity, governed by the work plan of the institution.
A good part of the group does not stop practicing sports during the whole school year, having the Taínos Interfaculty Games, with its version for the workers, and with the Caonao Recreation Games, held for the first time and which aim to encourage contact of university students with nature.
Even the rector Lajes puts on the athlete's shirt and every Wednesday he confronts the students he has for students in a basketball game.
"We share a moment when there are no differences between the principal and students. We are the same, whether we are good, bad or regular in the game, "he says.
