Foto: PLHavana, Mar 6.- Cuban women celebrate their X Congress today with much to celebrate for their broad participation in society, said Teresa Amarelle, general secretary of the organization that groups millions of women.
With regard to the beginning this Wednesday, of the conclave of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), the member of the Council of State highlighted -cited by the newspaper Granma- political, social and economic achievements framed in the six decades of revolution on the island.
Today we represent 53.22 percent of the seats in the National Assembly of People's Power, the highest legislative body in the country; 48.4 of the members of the Council of State, 60.5 of the university graduates and 67.2 of the technicians and professionals, he said.
According to Amarelle, it is a different scenario from that faced by women in other parts of the world, as a result of the efforts of the women and the political will of the revolutionary government. Every March 8 is a day of struggle for many women in the world. They go out to the streets to demand rights such as access to education and decent work, family planning and to participate more in decisions, but their governments almost never listen to complaints. In Cuba, the picture is different, he stressed.
For 60 years, "said the deputy to the National Assembly," we enjoy rights that many countries dream of having one day, and we have been, as Fidel Castro said, "a revolution within the revolution."
Regarding the congress, scheduled until Friday, the general secretary of the FMC explained that it has been conceived in a different way, more dynamic and close to the bases.
During this day, four commissions meet in different institutions of the Cuban capital, to analyze the role of the organization and its mobilizing function in the context of updating the economic model, he explained.
According to Amarelle, the working groups also address gender equality in the family and society, youth as a guarantee of the continuity of the FMC, and its functioning.
Although progress on the path to gender equality in Cuba has been enormous in the last 60 years, sexist patterns continue to predominate, which it identified as a challenge.
The leader also mentioned the challenge of achieving an equitable division of household chores, both in the social sphere and in the public sphere.
"This way we avoid that the woman is overloaded with those responsibilities that have been attributed to her socially throughout history," he said.
360 delegates and 40 guests are registered at the X Congress of the FMC. (PL)
