After their arrival at the José Martí International Airport, the distinguished visitors placed floral offerings to the Cuban National Hero at the base of the monument that honors him in the Plaza de la Revolución.
This is the first official visit made by a member of the royal family to Cuba, although the island and the United Kingdom maintain uninterrupted historical relations since 1902.
The visit confirms the deepening of the political dialogue between both countries and the will to continue strengthening bilateral relations in all areas.
There is an interest shared by both governments to continue strengthening economic relations and cooperation in areas of common interest such as energy, agriculture, health and education.
In 2016, the then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Commonwealth, Philip Hammond, made a visit to Cuba, the first of that level to develop an authority of that country since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
Also the transit through the United Kingdom, carried out by the president of the Councils of State and Ministers Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in November 2018, was an opportune occasion to hold various meetings, which included the second figure of the government and current minister of Treasury, Philip Hammond.
Cuba also recognizes the traditional support of the United Kingdom to the Cuban resolution against the blockade, presented every year in the General Assembly of the United Nations, and appreciates the positive role of this country in the development of a constructive and respectful relationship with our country. the European Union.
