The FCB-MLB agreement cancel,was a bad move

Photo: JITPhoto: JITHavana 16 abr. - The influential newspaper The New York Times spoke this Sunday, in terms of opinion, on the cancellation of the Agreement between the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) and the Major League Baseball (MLB), by the administration of Donald Trump.

"Canceling the deal was a bad move for the wrong reasons. Cuba's decision to allow its athletes to earn their living abroad was a step in the right direction, even if some dollars had spilled into the government coffers, "said an article signed by the Editorial Board.

The material, not as extensive as others of its kind, ratified as aggressive lines the "dominance" exercised by the Cuban government over the FCB, as well as the strategic relations that the Island maintains with Venezuela. Nothing new.

In that sense, it is considered that: "Although Cuba must be dissuaded from supporting the Maduro regime, this should not be a pretext to satisfy the obsession of the right to maintain a permanent freeze in relations with Cuba."

The first, obviously, lacks moral force, political and diplomatic sense, because each country sovereignly decides the relations it establishes with other nations. And Cuba, already has expressed it more than once, will not renounce its deep ties with Caracas.

The second is a crushing truth: only the American right, and not all, but the most retrograde and violent, is opposed to the establishment of normal relations with the largest of the Antilles.

"In the end, what Senator Rubio and the administration
accomplished to a large extent was to deny Cuban baseball players their right to play at the highest level without having to sneak dangerously into the United States and renounce the right to return to his country of origin ", is estimated at the close of the Sunday text.

We could add that the decision stimulates again the illegal emigration and the trafficking of people, in a dance of millions that already mourned Cuban families more than once.

The opinion of the NYT recalls that the FCB-MLB Agreement began to take shape after the turn in the relations of both countries achieved during the Barack Obama administration. It details the way in which Rubio, Bolton and the National Review, in an article written by the recalcitrant Elliott Abrams, attacked his signature hours after the historic day of December 19, 2018.

The New York newspaper simplifies the historical links of Cuba and Venezuela to the change of oil by doctors and "intelligence", and calls as "demands" the aggressions with which 12 administrations have tried to overthrow the Revolution.

The lucidity of the Editorial Board emerged, however, in the following lines: "The effort of Obama to end more than five decades of hostility towards Cuba was approved by a large majority of Americans as an opening that had long been backward allowing some players from Cuba, crazy about baseball, to play legally in the big leagues was a win-win proposition: players who could have risked a dangerous flight would legally achieve stardom and wealth; Cuban baseball would earn some money; and his presence would be tangible evidence of a crack in the ice. Accepting the myth of an independent Cuban baseball federation was considered a necessary nod ».

On this last idea, which seems to be one of the solid causes for the end of the Agreement, it should be noted that MLB is not an "independent" entity of the US government either. Now and before it ´s an agreement with the White House even to send a bat to Havana. The double standards cannot be more evident: the FCB must be "free", but the MLB must be able to be managed from Washington. It would be laughable, if that ideology had not overthrown the December pact.

In short, The New York Times has spoken on the Agreement, although with one of lime and another of sand. To point out the essences of the subject, he has had to repeat some phrases coined from anti-Cuban politics. He could not help it. These are the rules. (JIT)
