Managua, June 19. - Title III of the Helms Burton Law infringes on the human rights of Cubans, is immoral and disastrous, affirmed today the Nicaraguan evangelical pastor Sixto Ulloa.
According to our precepts and principles, we condemn this law and, in general terms, the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, the religious told Prensa Latina.
"How is it possible that people have the legal protection to claim today properties they left behind six decades ago?" Ulloa questioned.
The aforementioned Title III of the Helms Burton Act makes it possible for US citizens to claim before their country's courts properties nationalized by the Cuban Revolution in the early years of the 1960s.
This title will not only affect the island, but also companies from third countries with significant investments in sectors such as tourism, mining and energy given the extraterritorial nature of the blockade.
"Many of those people or their families made a fortune out of the island's wealth, and abandoned it with the hope that a political change dictated from Washington would be returned to them," said Ulloa, also the Special Ombudsman for Citizen Participation. the Office of the Procurator for the Defense of Human Rights in Nicaragua.
However, he stressed, six decades later claim through this law claim something that clearly does not belong to them, and 'that is an unusual issue, which should not be dedicated time, an issue against which the Cuban government should remain immovable' , he said.
Ulloa insisted on noticing the damage that the blockade has caused to the Caribbean island, and that with the application of Title III of the Helms Burton does nothing but harm the people, a people, stressed, 'that based on sacrifices has built the better health and education system in Latin America, among other achievements.
“As a Nicaraguan and as a Christian belonging to an evangelical denomination, we do not accept the blockade imposed by successive US administrations and that has made us decide to accompany Cuba unconditionally, first with Fidel Castro, then with Raúl Castro and now with Miguel Díaz –Canel”, insisted the evangelical pastor.
This position goes beyond words, he said, as a church and Nicaraguans we have made public our position against the blockade and against the United States government for its policies against the sovereign decision of Cubans to choose under what political system they want to live. .
Ulloa recalled that on several occasions they have sent letters and other documents to the US authorities demanding the end of the blockade, a policy intensified by the current president of that country, Donald Trump, whom he described as "amateur to be president" and author of "stupidities" policies that attempt against human rights. '
"We as Christians stand firm in a position of accompaniment and solidarity with the Cuban people," reiterated the Special Procurator for Citizen Participation.
“We have visited the island through the Council of Churches of Cuba and thanks to this exchange we know a little more about its reality; We know, for example, that freedom of belief is respected, that no religious practice is censored, that all kinds of religions coexist in harmony, and that there is no religious persecution, etc.", he pointed out.
