They demand to annul oath of new governor of Puerto Rico

San Juan, Aug. 5.- The president of the Senate of Puerto Rico, Thomas Rivera Schatz, filed a lawsuit in order to annul the oath of Pedro Pierluisi to govern the Caribbean island.

In the lawsuit, filed in the Court of First Instance of San Juan, Rivera Schatz argues that "in Puerto Rico there is an unprecedented situation after the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosselló", because the process was carried out "partially ", because the consent process is still pending in the Senate, says Telesur.

He indicated that Pierluisi, who before swearing in as governor was appointed by Rosselló as secretary of state, took an oath to the position, based on "an incorrect interpretation of the law."

Rosselló resigned from the governor of Puerto Rico on August 2, after massive protests against him after the leak of chats in which he and several of his officials offended opposition politicians, critics and artists.

The law of the country establishes that in case the position of governor becomes vacant, the secretary of state will assume it. However, the previous holder of that portfolio, Luis G. Rivera Marín, resigned on July 13.

According to the constitutionally established legal procedure, the next one in the line of succession is the person who occupies the Ministry of Justice, in this case Wanda Vázquez, but she announced that she did not wish to hold the position. Given this, Rosselló announced on July 31 that he appointed Pierluisi as secretary of state. (RHC)
