An average of 809 people were killed every day, one every minute and a half, something that turns deaths caused by the so-called 'adverse events' into the second cause of death in Brazil, said the report Hospital Safety Assurance Yearbook, issued by the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

The daily death toll caused by these medical errors is even higher than the one jointly caused by cancer, violence and traffic accidents, said the report.

The report indicated that along with the death rate that they cause, medical errors affect some 1,400,00 patients each year, leaving damages that not only affect their daily routine, but cause them great psychological suffering.

In this regard, specialists told the Globo television channel that the alarming report tackled mostly cases occurring in small hospitals located in rural areas of the country, and also that they are caused by lack of financing, management and training of human resources. (PL)
