Guatemala Updates Data for Referendum on Dispute with Belize

Photo: Cadenagramonte.Guatemala, Jan 4.- The Guatemalan population update their data today or register themselves for the referendum scheduled for April 15th to settle the conflict with Belize.
That day, the population will decide if the territorial, maritime and insular dispute between Guatemala and Belize is definitively settled in the International Court of Justice.
According to Ana Elly Lopez, acting magistrate of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), most voters are already registered, but it would be necessary to update data if any address was changed, which would allow people to vote at the closest polling place to the current address.
According to Lopez, TSE campaign will be strengthened today in the traditional media, emphasizing the role of social networks to have greater impact on young people.
With the Personal Identification Document, the population can go to the TSE registration centers in the capital city, as well as TSE offices in the 340 municipalities of the country.
Guatemala recognized the unilateral independence of Belize in 1991, but the continental, insular and maritime dispute prevails.
Guatemala claims 12,272 square kilometers of Belizean territory, including that from the river Sarstun, in the south, to the river Sibun, in the north. (Cadenagramonte)
