At least 49 Casualties in Plane Crash in Nepal

Photo: PLKathmandu, Mar 12.- At least 49 people died today when a plane of the US-Bangla Airlines company, with 67 passengers and four crew members on board, crashed at the Tribhuvan international airport, in this capital, as it was descending.
In statements to the press, Deputy Inspector General of the Police of Nepal, Manoj Neupaney, confirmed the figure and explained that 22 other people were hospitalized.
Neupaney pointed out that the accident of the Bombardier, a commercial aircraft with two propellers, occurred at 14:18 local time.
The authorities recovered 31 charred bodies from the debris of the plane while 18 others were declared dead in medical centers.
According to Raj Kumar Chettri, general manager of the airport, flight BS-211, which covered the Dhaka-Kathmandu route, collided with a fence of the facility when it descended on the runway.
Although he clarified that it is still early to determine the cause of the accident, the head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Sanjiv Gautam, hinted at a technical failure.
The aircraft received a green light to land in the southern area, but in the end it tried to do it in the north, he said.
After hearing the news, the Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, visited the site to know first hand the details of the accident and the state of the injured, as well as the security measures taken. (PL)
