Díaz-Canel Talks About Potential of Cuba-US Agricultural Relations

Photo: CadenagramonteNew York, Sep 27.- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel met with US agricultural businessmen today and highlighted how this is one of the sectors the northern nation defends the most regarding the relations with the island. Although this visit to the UN General Assembly is very tight, we had a lot of interest in this meeting and in moving a message of peace, unity, understanding, and also for meeting, the president said.
Agriculture is one of the sectors with which Cuba has had some possibility, very limited, in order to have an economic and commercial exchange in this country, he recalled. Even, at one time, more than 1.1 billion dollars in a year, he explained.
According to the governor, this figure fell due to the resurgence of the US blockade against the island, which imposes cash payments and limits the amounts.
Despite the measures taken by the new administration of the White House, we are still open to talks, he said, noting that there are many reasons that show the US people’s and Cuba’s interest, and also from the Cubans living in the United States, who want links between both countries.
The setback in the reestablishment of relations is only linked to the interests of a minority that, working with politics, tries to stop the rapprochement, he stressed.
Therefore, the Cuban president ratified before the US agricultural entrepreneurs that Cuba comes with a message of dialogue, provided it on a base of respect, without conditioning and without impositions.
An exchange with the North American agricultural sector would also allow the transfer of technology and increase some local productions and later, could be extended to scientific and technological order in a mutually beneficial way, said the Cuban leader in the meeting with businessmen.
This meeting, held at the headquarters of the Cuban mission to the UN, was organized by the United States Agricultural Coalition for Cuba (USACC) and by the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA). (Cadenagramonte)
