Photo: PLUnited Nations, March 11.- The largest event on gender equity in the world, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), begins today at the UN headquarters in New York.
The 63rd edition of the event focuses on social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
In addition, the empowerment of women and the link with sustainable development will be discussed, according to the organizers.
The CSW will meet until March 22 to government representatives, specialists and activists from different latitudes, while it is expected a record participation of civil society, with nine thousand attendees.
Through a video message, the president of the CSW, Geraldine Byrne Nason, highlighted that this is the second largest event of the UN, after the high-level debate of the General Assembly.
It is also a magnificent expression of the political participation of women across the globe, said the Irish diplomat.
This year will address issues such as the need for affordable health, education and social protection services for all. Such aspects are essential in order to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, said Byrne Nason.
But these are not just 'women's issues' because what is good for them is beneficial for the rest of society: no one wins when women and girls are left behind, he emphasized.
The president of the General Assembly of the UN, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, anticipated that the CSW will come the leaders of Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago.
At present, the meeting is considered the largest meeting on gender equity in the world and at the end of its sessions, a statement is adopted that serves as a roadmap for the policies of governments and institutions. (PL)
