Photo: PLWashington, Mar 19.- US President Donald Trump receives his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro, at the White House today, who acknowledges his government's intention to approach the world's largest economy and align itself with its policies.
'For the first time in a while, a Brazilian pro-American president arrives in Washington DC. It is the beginning of an alliance for freedom and prosperity, "Bolsonaro wrote on the social network Twitter minutes after landing on Sunday in the US capital to make a brief official visit.
According to the stay agenda, Bolsonaro will talk in the early hours of this Tuesday with Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), and the main column of Washington's coup intervention against Venezuela.
Recently the far-right politician aligned himself (supposedly humanitarian aid) with Trump in the attempt to force a coup in Caracas, through the breakdown of the Armed Forces and the nomination of the self-proclaimed president in charge Juan Guaidó.
At midday of this day, the Brazilian president will meet with Trump and there will be a press conference, before the private meeting between the two.
Bolsonaro traveled accompanied by six ministers, including Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, and Justice and Security Minister Sergio Moro.
The day before, the Brazilian head of state began the day with a visit to the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and, among other contacts and tours, he spoke at the Chamber of Commerce of Washington about the prospects of Brazil.
In the speech during the Brazil Day event, he highlighted the approach of his country with the United States and indicated that there is openness to increase commercial alliances and strategies between both nations.
He mentioned as an example the signing of the Agreement on Technological Safeguards (AST) that will allow the commercial use of the base of Alcántara, in the northern Brazilian state of Maranhão, for the launching of North American satellites.
Such an agreement is questioned by many politicians for representing a threat to the sovereignty of the giant South American country.
Commentators say that with his trip to the United States, Bolsonaro broke the tradition of the Brazilian presidents elected to make his first official visit to Argentina.
He also broke the usual national diplomacy of seeking distance with the great powers and closer South-South relations. (PL)
