United Kingdom rejects US blockade reinforcement against Cuba

Photo: PLPhoto: PLLondon, May 9.- The Solidarity with Cuba Campaign (CSC) in the United Kingdom warned today that the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act represents a very serious intensification of the US blockade against that Caribbean island.

This is a very dangerous step in the aggressive policy of Washington, because it seeks to discourage companies from other countries that want to invest in the Antillean country, assured Prensa Latina the director of the CSC, Rob Miller.

According to the director of the organization that brings together the friends of Cuba in the United Kingdom, the only objective pursued by the United States with this new escalation of sanctions is to damage the Cuban economy, and cause the greatest possible suffering to the population.

By virtue of the decision adopted by President Donald Trump, since May 2, US citizens can file lawsuits against Cuban and foreign companies that have invested in properties nationalized in Cuba after the triumph of the 1959 Revolution.

Until that moment, and since the adoption of the Helms-Burton Act in 1996, all US leaders, including Trump, had suspended the application of the aforementioned title.

In this regard, Miller welcomed a recent statement by the government of Prime Minister Theresa May where the extraterritorial nature of the measure is denounced, and she exhorted him to fulfill his promise to protect British companies and businessmen who invest in Cuba.

According to the director of the CSC, despite the existence of laws designed to protect the interests of national companies against possible extraterritorial claims, several British companies and entities have already been fined by the US Treasury Department for making business with Cuba.

In this regard, he mentioned the cases of the Open University and Lloyds and Scotland banks, penalized by the United States Asset Control Office.

That is why we are going to campaign in the United Kingdom to make sure that the government enforces those laws, and protects companies and businessmen who want to legally invest in the Caribbean island, he announced.

In Miller's opinion, the implementation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Law not only violates Cuban sovereignty, but is a matter that concerns the sovereignty of the United Kingdom. (PL)
