Bogota, Jun 20. - The policy of intensifying the blockade that the United States is implementing with respect to Cuba is another act of international "intimidation" of the Donald Trump government, said former Colombian President Ernesto Samper (1994). -1998).
In statements to Prensa Latina and Cuban television, the former secretary general of the Union of South American Nations said he had the conviction that the Cuban people will respond to such hostility with dignity and heroism as always.
I have faith in the heroic capacity of the Cuban people to resist this new onslaught, this anachronistic policy and low blows, "the exmandatario said, referring to the activation of Title III of the Helms Burton Law and other additional sanctions, such as the suspension of tourist excursions to the Island.
In the opinion of the well-known Colombian lawyer and politician, for many years there had not been an administration in the United States that was so aggressive in its relations with Latin America.
Such debauchery, he illustrated, has become evident not only with the onslaught towards Cuba, but also in the failed attempts of military intervention in Venezuela, in the construction of the Wall on the border with Mexico, in the expulsion of the emigrants and in the increase in tariffs for the hemisphere's export products.
Also in the White House's ignorance of the agreements in relation to climate change without taking into account that the Caribbean and the Andean countries are the most affected by the imbalances of climate and by natural disasters such as hurricanes and seismic events, Samper mused.
Trump, he added, is giving us back to the 40s and 50s of the last century when the governments of the United States were walking around the region as if it were a farm.
Samper pointed out that we must persist in the struggle and rejection of the US blockade that aims to suffocate the Cubans "because it is about defending a sovereign, independent agenda, in which Cuba can proudly show many examples, such as overcoming illiteracy, public health programs and social inclusion policies.
"Trump's cruelty against Cuba has only one explanation: to ingratiate himself with the Republican worms that promote his re-election from the most reactionary sector of the Republican Party.
Fortunately, Cuba is cured of scares and threats and will overcome this infamous stage, "said the ex-Colombian leader. (PL)
