An asteroid bigger than Big Ben closes to Earth

Foto: CadenagramonteFoto: CadenagramonteThe asteroid 2018 SP1 will approach to the Earth on October 3rd, reports the British newspaper Express, quoting NASA. The celestial body, classified by the space agency as an object near to the Earth (NEO, Near Earth Object), which measures between 70 and 160 meters, which is equivalent to the size of a football field (between 90 and 110 meters) and —Express says —  it even exceeds the Big Ben one and it is heading towards our planet at a speed of 60000 miles per hour.

The medium requires that the asteroid can cause "catastrophic damage", if it hits the surface of the planet. For his part, the director of the Russian Institute of Astronomy, Boris Shustov, said to RIA Novosti that SP1 does not pose a risk.

"It will approach to Earth at a distance of 5,870,000 miles. It is an ordinary event, it poses no threat, he said.

The object was detected on September 19th this year. It is anticipated that after approaching our planet, SP1 will pass on November 3rd, 2018 "very close" to Venus. Dozens of years later, on October 2nd, 2051, the asteroid will approach the Earth again. (Cadenagramonte)
