Ethiopia aims to improve National Health Care System

Photo: CadenagramontePhoto: CadenagramonteAddis Ababa, Oct 8.- Ethiopia is currently studying the implementation of new strategies to encourage private sector participation with a view to positively impact the population’s standard of living and raising awareness about communicable and non-communicable diseases. According to Tefere Megistu, Head of Communications at the Ministry of Public Health, improving the development perspective of women and girls is one of the government's priorities, as stipulated in the National Growth and Transformation Plan.

To this end, a partnership was established with the non-profit organization People to People (P2P), which focuses on strengthening health systems through coordination with local hospitals and universities.

P2P also focuses on participating in various projects aimed at working with orphan children due to HIV/AIDS, the elderly, the deaf community, women and more.

Thus, the Government and the entity are deploying mechanisms to strengthen resilience through universal access to sexual and reproductive health, such as conversations, home visits, humanitarian assistance, family planning services, focusing on the most vulnerable social strata.

The initiatives seek to reduce the incidence of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, as well as tuberculosis, malaria, among others, said Megistu.

They also seek to control the birth rate, which is increasing rapidly in this nation, especially in low-income sectors, which negatively affects the proper development of the child.

At the same time, aware of the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, the Ministry executes a comprehensive strategic action plan for prevention and control focused on the reduction of risk behaviors. The main diseases currently under consideration include cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, respiratory problems and mental health.

To this end, it promotes awareness of the need to increase physical activity, to eliminate unhealthy diets, alcohol consumption and smoking.

Since its launch, the joint program has already conducted more than 6.6 million blood pressure tests in the community and in health centers, trained more than 5,800 workers in the sector, including doctors, nurses, volunteers and pharmacists, who will then provide education to society.

In addition, 680 health care centers were activated to administer hypertension services, including the establishment of safe supply chains of high-quality medications. (Cadenagramonte)
