Havana, May 28.- The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, congratulated on behalf of his country his counterpart from Syria, Bashar al-Asad, who was re-elected for another seven years term.
In his Twitter account, the Cuban head of state also ratified the deep friendship and solidarity between the governments and peoples of both nations.
Bashar al-Assad won the presidential elections with 95.1 percent of the votes cast by the 14 million 239 thousand 140 Syrians who exercised their right to vote in the elections.
According to the head of the Syrian People's Assembly, Bassam al-Sabbagh, who made the announcement the day before, the national opposition candidate Mahmoud Ahmad Merhi obtained 470,267 of the valid ballots, representing 3.3 percent.
Another 213,968 people opted for candidate Abdullah Saloum Abdullah, to reach 1.5 percent of the vote.
Immediately after the announcement, hundreds of thousands of citizens and supporters of the president filled the streets and squares of the main cities and towns to celebrate the victory, press reports highlight.
The Syrian Constitution approved in the 2012 referendum sets the presidential term of seven years and the president can be elected only for two consecutive terms.
The elections were held in the midst of difficult circumstances that the nation is going through due to the escalation of the media and political war, and the intensification of the blockade and sanctions.
However, around 87 percent of those registered to vote went to the polls, which, according to analysts, shows the respect of Syrians for their Constitution and institutions. (Cadenagramonte)
