Sierra de Cubitas, Jan 25.- Theater as a cultural manifestation is inserted in the schools and in the House of Culture of the municipality of Sierra de Cubitas thanks to the impetus of young professionals.
Leonel Pérez Pérez, a graduate of the School of Art Instructors Nicolás Guillén, of Camagüey, is one of the young people who strengthen the creation of works for the development of skills.
What it have been done by those graduated from that already mentioned school consolidates the creation of works for the development of skills, where my interviewee is a good example of sacrifice and dedication in favor of his countrymen.
Georgina González Meléndrez: What does the theater mean to you?
Leonel Pérez Pérez: As for me it is life, since I was a child I love it. Tables are like the expression of the everyday existence, being involved in it is like living new spaces where I can make people who get pleasure from it laugh, cry and why not, dream.
GGM: Do you think it necessary more professionals to develop the theater as a cultural expression?
LPP: Yes, I do. Art instructors in theater have diminished as well as the other creators´ great works. It is crucial to continue promoting this manifestation creatively with a lot of love an effort. The attempt here is stronger because we are few people engaged with it, but I also think that if we work hard we can achieve much better results. Children and young people are willing to link with theater activities since it is noticeable whenever you see them enjoying the presentations.
GGM: Why do you always prefer humorous works?
LPP: It has a lot to do with my roots as a farmer; I am from La Gloria, a little town in the countryside. Peasants are characters well accepted by the people as long as we know how to take them to stage with pleasure and good humor.
GGM: What do you call good humor?
LPP: That way of saying without falling into vulgarity, making people laugh but with the Cuban idiosyncrasy, as the peasants speak without ridiculing them.
GGM: Is theater making progress in Sierra de Cubitas?
LPP: We must go on working hard so that our little progress does not become forgotten. It is necessary to take up many experiences, however, we must continue with what we have done well, so that people enjoy and children learn it.
GGM: Do you think theatrical projects should be carried out more systematically?
LPP: Yes I do, it is indispensable that those who are concerned with dramatic performance get motivated with that scenario, it´s true we lack resources, although we have to replace that with motivations to achieve better results.
GGM: What immediate works can the public of Sierra de Cubitas appreciate?
LPP: Well, now we are occupied in the Municipal Theater Festival that will be at the end of January, I am convinced that it will be a good show because that is what we have deeply worked for.
Two days ago actors and actresses from all over Cuba commemorated the Day of the Cuban Theater, a manifestation that became a tradition since the events of the Villanueva Theater, on January 22, 1869, when people of Havana City performed an event in favor of the dignity of our homeland.
Nowadays the theater manifests itself with the freedom of a nation that 59 years ago reached its full independence and sovereignty, thanks to the leadership of the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
