China demands the US suspend the sale of American arms to Taiwan

Photo: PLBeijing, July 9 .- China warned the United States today not underestimate its determination to protect national sovereignty and integrity, to reiterate the sentence and demand to suspend the announced sale of American arms to Taiwan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a news conference that his government is deeply dissatisfied and protested to White House representatives over the approval yesterday of the delivery of more than $ 2 billion worth of war equipment to Taiwan.

That action, he said, constitutes a serious violation of international law, the basic rules on international relations, the principle of One China and the three joint communiqués signed by Beijing and Washington.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman also considered it a form of interference in the internal affairs of the Asian nation, and an affront to its sovereignty and security interests.

Finally, he stressed that Taiwan is an integral part of China and the United States should not ignore the invariable determination to fight any secessionist attempt on its soil.

Geng issued these statements in response to the confirmation by the US Department of State of the sale of war tanks, anti-missile systems and aircraft to the southern island.

It is the first such operation in decades and follows a meeting last May between John Bolton, US National Security Advisor, and the head of the branch in Taiwan, David Lee.

China opposes all kinds of contacts with the Taipei authorities and maintains that it will fight to the end to counteract any separatist maneuver, given the US military meddling and support on the issue, considered the most sensitive in bilateral relations.

Defense Minister Wei Fenghe has publicly warned that "if anyone dares to divide Taiwan from China, our forces will have no choice but to fight at any cost (...) the United States is indivisible, and

China must and will be reunited, "he said, noting that a war between the two powers would be disastrous.

The international community approved with 170 votes a resolution in 1971 that considers the People's Republic of China the only legitimate representative before the United Nations and recognizes the island of Taiwan as an inalienable part of that Asian nation.

To advance towards the complete reunification of the national territory, Beijing also defends the policy of One country, two systems, applied successfully in the administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. (PL)
