Outstanding Cuban revolutionary and teacher, Asela de los Santos, passes away in Havana

Havana, January 23.- The prominent Cuban revolutionary and educator Asela de los Santos Tamayo died Thursday in Havana at the age of 90.
Asela was the founder of revolutionary pedagogy and a faithful promoter of the right to education and the improvement of teaching in Cuba. She was born on September 10, 1929 in Santiago de Cuba. She graduated as a Doctor of Pedagogy in 1954.
In 1952, she joined the student struggles at the University of Oriente, where she met Vilma Espín, to whom she was united by an eternal sisterhood and fidelity. She was a close friend of Frank País García during the underground struggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in the cities, and wife of the revolutionary José Ramón Fernández, known as "El Gallego."
After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Asela de los Santos carried out important battles in the field of education. She obtained the scientific degree of Doctor in Pedagogy and served for many years as the Minister of Education in Cuba. Asela was a founding member of the Federation of Cuban Women and the Communist Party of Cuba.
